Casual Stripe

If you can look past the fact that I look absolutely horrible in this photo, you’ll notice… my BurdaStyle dress is finished! I can honestly say, this project was a lot of fun to work on (it may also have to do with the fact that I finally got to work on something I really wanted to make). The directions were clear, the pieces went together well, and the fit is spot on. I will caution that even though this pattern is labeled ‘easy’ I wouldn’t suggest it for very new sewers or those who haven’t tried sewing stretch fabrics before – the curved areas are ‘tricky’ to stitch (I suggest lots of pins, just in case), especially in a knit fabric (I think there might be a tendency to overstretch these areas). Otherwise, the effect of this dress is extremely flattering and makes for a fun, casual look in a stripe!

I’ll be doing the draw for the Singer One sewing machine later on in the day. After I have a chance to contact the winner, etc. I’ll be sure to make an announcement on the page!

I love browsing fashion sites and magazines to check out the latest trends. I recently spotted this figure-flattering Lela Rose color-block sheath dress (photo on the left) and fell in love…. although not with the price tag ($1,295)! While pattern surfing I stumbled across BurdaStyle 7053 – which had remarkably similar lines to my inspiration dress, but in a knit. At first, I thought I would use a heathered gray knit with solid black jersey for this design, but after staring at the pattern for awhile, I decided the stripe (I have a weakness for stripes) was definitely more ‘me’… I even had a black strip knit sitting in my stash just waiting for me to use. Here’s the project details for this one, proving, sometimes it is more economical to sew!

Project Details:

Michael Miller Dalmatian Stripe knit from Fabric.com

Black cotton knit remnant from stash

Materials & Cost:
