Last week’s Mini Magda Wristlets must have triggered some bag making desires, because I had the sudden urge to make some more. After digging through my fabric\vinyl stash I settled on this great Lydia Deetz print, plum vinyl, black and white stripe (lining) and rainbow hardware & zipper tape. I decided to try my hand at The Zippy Clutch pattern again (you can see my first attempt here) and had much better success with it this time around… in fact, I enjoyed sewing it so much, I think I’ll make a few more!
Again, I made several modifications to the pattern: I recued the width of the wrist strap so that it could fit a 1/2″ clasp, I used a cotton woven fabric (with additional interfacing) instead of a heavier canvas material, I used the credit card slots add on pack for the interior lining, and used a #5 zipper tape for the front and top zippers. I’m very pleased with the overall result:
The only thing I’m not thrilled with is the topstitching on the vinyl. Even though I was using a teflon foot, I felt as if it was still “sticking” more than what it should have, which resulted in much smaller stitching. I also used a variegated thread called Villainous (currently out of stock here) which uses black, purple, & green. While this matches the fabric and vinyl perfectly, it matches too perfectly and I feel like most of it gets lost, except the green.
I plan on sending this one off to a friend for her birthday, but I definitely see making a few more of these (so be prepared this week to see at least 1 more). Now that I’ve worked out the kinks, I think the next one should go MUCH smoother.
