Easy Screenprinting?

Category : General

The other day, I had the rare opportunity of browsing Hobby Lobby by myself. While I came home empty handed, I almost gave into temptation. While I can’t really justify the purchase of a YUDU right now (with the cost of the machine, inks, emulsion remover, shirts, etc will I ever screen print materials to make it pay off?), I think I may have found a good alternative – Plaid’s Simply Screen. Along with inks, glitters, and foil sheets they have a number of pre-made, adhesive screens. While this severely restricts your design options (the YUDU allows you to make your own), I think it can give me a taste of what screen printing is like (and possibly help me to figure out a way to make my own).
I think that this is a fairly new product since I haven’t been able to find any product reviews on it. Does anyone have any experience with Simply Screen materials?

Hi Stacy! I don’t have any experience with screen printing, but I just read this post about 1/2 hour ago –then I read your blog–wierd! Anyways, thought you might enjoy her post b/c even though it isn’t the same producer, is seems to be a similar product… I’ll be eager to hear how yours turns out!

Cost-per-use That is how I now decide whether to invest in pricey craft and kitchen tools (and even shoes/bags/clothes!). I’ve cut back.
I used a paper embossing/die-cutting gadget (Cuddlebug?) at a book arts class recently and thought about buying one (they were even on sale that week at a local craft store). But I figured out that I could instead buy an awful lot of already-embossed paper/die cuts for even the sale price – more than I would probably ever really use.
But, sigh, the machine WAS fun. So I might just cave someday soon. LOL
(My Mom used to make multiples of her crafts and sell the extras at senior craft fairs to finance her tools and supplies! “Pin Money”)

The Yudu is one of the things that’s come around recently that bugs me beyond belief–it’s such an expensive piece of equipment (and the supplies are even moe expensive), and you can get far better results with a beginners screenprinting kit for around $60 (which will allow you to create a ton of prints). That’s what I recommend to folks who are interested in trying out screenprinting. These usually come with a selection of inks, squeegee, screen, emulsion, all the stuff you need to play. And, actually, the instructions that come with these kits are really pretty good. (Josh & I have been meaning to do a series of blog posts about screenprinting, what you need to get started, etc, but life’s sort of gotten in the way.) Just my .02.
