Happy New Year – I hope you have a wonderful, prosperous, and healthy 2009! I also want to take a moment to thank everyone who visits this site, listens to me ramble, and allows me to share all my projects! I may not always be able to respond to your comments (at times I forget that life with a baby is so busy), but I always read them no matter how crazy it gets around here!
I spent a great deal of time this morning debating whether to put up a Linky Thursday post or making my Sewing New Year’s Resolutions. Originally, I was going to skip making a list to accomplish over the coming year, but honestly, I think it helps keep me focused. So, without further ado, here’s my New Year’s Sewing Resolutions for 2009 (I’ll post links tomorrow):
Lose the rest of that baby weight. While this doesn’t seem like a sewing resolution, it really is. My body has changed significantly in the last year and I’m still not where I would like to be. Consequently, I’m all over the board when it comes to sewing patterns.
Sew more for others. This was the first year that I’ve ever made a large amount of gifts for other people. Not only did I enjoy the process, everything was well received.
Assess my wardrobe and create the items that I need. I’ll admit, I have a bit of ADHD when it comes to sewing (which is why this doesn’t read, “Participate in a SWAP”). I love projects that have ‘instant gratification’ and am easily distracted by new patterns. I know I can’t change this about me, but I need to look at what I ‘need’ in my closet and go from there. Fortunately at the moment I ‘need’ about everything (see number one of my resolutions!) so I have a great start!
Become better at alterations. This is pretty much a ‘standard’ that I talk about every year.
Use more of the patterns that I currently own – including magazines like Burda, Ottobre, and Patrones. This goes back to the idea that I’m easily distracted by new patterns, so much so I’ve become a collector! I’m vowing to get to those patterns that I’ve always wanted to sew up and use the magazines that I subscribe to more often.
Stop being afraid to use my ‘favorite’ fabrics that are in my stash. You know those fabrics that you fall in love with and purchase, but don’t have a purpose for them so you stash them for when the right pattern comes along – then the ‘right pattern’ comes along and you refuse to use the fabric for fear that you might mess up and ruin your favorite print (I hope that there are others that feel this way and not just me)? I intend on using those prints and will recite the mantra “There is always more fabric.”
Alright, that’s my list and I’m stickin’ to it! What’s your resolutions for 2009? I’d love to hear them!

Have you been reading my diary? HAHAH. I am with you on your pattern collection & fear of cutting fabrics!
I wanted to let you know how much I love your blog. I read it everyday. I have some serious ‘clutter’ issues I want to deal with in ’09. My whole house is one big mess. I resolve to deal with it one room at a time. But first I have to get off the computer and get going!!
Happy New Year!
Sara
I hear you about the baby weight – it’s a bit difficult to choose your sewing projects when you’re no longer positive what works and what doesn’t.
I also used to be afraid to sew with my “fave” fabric…but really, what’s the difference between using it and it not turning out just as you had hoped or letting it become out of date due to the fear of using it? As much as I hate muslins that’s the time I whip one up to make sure I’m going to like the line of the garment before using my “fave” fabric.
Great goals Stacy! My main goals are to sew more for me, use my fabric stash (which has been working out pretty good lately), and more solid color mix & match garments. Happy New Year to you and your family!!!!!
P.S. I too suffer from being afraid to use my favorite fabrics, silly, huh?
OOps, that was my comment that was “anonymous” forgot to fill in the blanks.
Uh huh! You struck a chord with the problem of fearing to use your favorite fabrics. I figured I was the rare bird, but apparently not. Good to know.
Seems I’m not alone in not wanting to cut a favorite fabric. I faced that with the apron I made my niece for Christmas but I went ahead and did it anyways. I’m glad I did.
For 2009 I want to reduce my stash, sew more for other people (those box bags were fun and a big hit as gifts), make at least one wearable thing per month, get my machines cleaned and adjusted -it’s been awhile since they were professionally done and they need it! And one more…make some gym clothes. They’re so expensive and probably easy to make.
Love your blog Stacy. Keep the good things coming!
Happy New Year Stacy!
One of my sewing resolutions is to make something for myself. I just haven’t done it though I have all kinds of patterns. I think part of it is because of the weight I’m losing and plan on losing since the baby. I don’t really know what size I am and I have no clue what type of stuff I really want to wear! It seems as if I’ve been in maternity wear for 6 yrs. (Seems? I have been!!) I keep saying that I’ll make something once I lose all the weight. But I think I’m scared that I won’t like what I make. It’s so easy sewing for young children. They like just about anything. The first step is for me to buy some fabric. So, 2009 is gonna be my year for sewing for myself!
Also, I really must stop buying all the books, with patterns and magazines. I must, but I really don’t want to! What I need to do also, is go through them and make something from it. I keep saying I’m gonna get to it. I have a binder full of free patterns from the internet, favorite links saved on my computer for free patterns and too many patterns to count!
Hello! My name is Katrina and I have Sewing ADHD and I’m a Fabric Junkie
Yep I have fear of cutting too! Many of my fabrics have been aging nicely for the past few years now….
Also I agree with Sharon about fabrics going out of date – I have a few fabrics/patterns that are waiting for the next turn in the fashion cycle
My main resolutions are to continue to organize all my sewing/craft supplies. (I can’t seem to make a significant dent and It never ends!) and to use my “good fabrics” instead of saving them. Going along with both of those plans, I stopped buying new fabric (mostly, anyway!), patterns, and craft supplies months ago – unless I am going to use them IMMEDIATELY.
That Sophia bag is too cute! Looking forward to what you create in 2009.
