The Good, The Bad, And The Frumpy

With the 2007 Emmy awards underfoot, it’s time to talk about the fashions! I really thought that this year, with a few exceptions, everyone looked great. In fact, I had so many favorites, I had a hard time narrowing them down for this post. My winners:

Christina Agulera in her beautiful Valentino gown (who could tell she’s pregnant in this?) and Heidi Klum in her couture Christian Dior dress. I saw the interview she gave to E! where she said she designed her own jewelry to go with this ensemble. Fabulous!

My next round of favorites would have to be Portia De Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres. They always look so coordinated and Portia’s dress is stunning (not to mention they both look fantastic in navy). Minnie Driver is also a standout in this year’s Emmy’s with her golden wrap dress. After doing a bit of surfing, I found that the bodice of Vogue 8150 may be a close match for her style.
Not everyone on the red carpet looked fabulous, however. Unfortunately, there were some who looked nice, but just plain frumpy:

The hands down winner in the frumpy category has to be Hayden Panettiere. Somewhere underneath that empire waist has to be a body…. this was something I expected Christina Agulera to wear, not this tiny teen. Next up, Marcia Cross. The dress overall isn’t horrid, but those triangles pointing her her midriff just seems to say “Look at my stomach, I just had twins earlier this year.” Lastly, there’s Conchata Ferrell. I would really like to tell her that just because you’re full figured doesn’t mean you have to hide your shape under loose and baggy dresses. Instead of looking like she’s wearing a gown, Conchata looks like she’s wearing a sparkling choir robe.
And then there were those dresses that left something to be desired:

Ok, actually I could only really come up with one – Vanessa Williams. Her gown reminds me of Penelope Cruz’s Oscar gown – too many feathers. Both Jenna Fischer and Jaime Pressly should probably be bumped up to the “frumpy” category instead.
In my opinion, the Emmy dress most easily recreated by a mainstream pattern:

Debra Messing’s Ralph Lauren gown. It’s almost a dead ringer for Vogue 2930, don’t you think?
Alright, so enough of my ramblings. Who were your favorites or least liked designs?

I have to agree with you on all counts! My favorite, though, overall was Christina Aguilara, definately. That is such a timeless, beautiful gown!

Good eye with that Ralph Lauren/Vogue match!

Great catch with the Debra Messing dress. I actually kind of like Hayden Pantierete, but given that she’s about 4 ft 6 she should not have that much volume. I do think the color of Vanessa Williams’ dress is stunning but she looks like she can fly. Heidi Klum looks amazing.

I liked the Christina Aguilara didn’t have that awful red lipstick on when she sang with Tony Bennett. Eva Longoria’s dress was surprisingly unflattering. I thought America Ferrera looked very pretty. I loved the snake holding up Portia de Rossi’s dress.
My favorites were Becki Newton (Ugly Betty) and Heidi Klum.
I love that you already found a pattern that matches Debra Messing’s dress.

Heidi’s look was best – but since she is a supermodel and the gown was couture (made to fit her JUST HER), that’s to be expected, right? She also seems to be a really good person so I always favor her.
My other favorite was Felicity Huffman’s hot pink, drapey gown. That style does show off its detail best on a slim figure – but she is way too skinny and it shows in that dress. You should not be able to count ribs without an x-ray.
I really liked Marcis Cross’ platinum dress – just not on her current figure. It was not fitted well, either. Her designer and stylist get an F- for letting that happen.
In general, I thought too many maturing actresses wore too low a neckline – which did not flatter their lowering, flattening, braless cleavages. It distracts attention away from the REST of the dress. Low can be striking, if done right.
(The reason women, no matter what their size/shape, look great in COUTURE – Heidi’s Dior, Aguilera’s Valentino – is that such garments are built AROUND carefully-fitted, boned infrastructures. Your body does not have to do any of the work. These dresses often could STAND up by themselves! That’s why they cost 20K and up. And now I want one! hahaha)
One final thought – off a card I saw MANY years ago:
“It”s easy to grin when you’re pretty as sin, with a figure that’s really STACKED.
The girl who’s worthwhile is the one who can SMILE, while her girdle rides up in the back!”

I couldn’t agree with you more. What was Vanessa thinking? Shades of Bjork from some years ago! Same with Hayden Panetierre. Hayden, show it off while ya got it! Heidi always has some stunning gown on but that hair looked awful & Seale could’ve done up his tie. Shame on him. So, yes, Christina gets 1st place in my book. Debra Messing is much ado about nothing in my book. And let’s hear for the 60-somethings – Sally Fields & Helen Mirren – for not afraid to show it off. You go, girls!

I was a little disappointed with the dresses. My fave was Katherine Heigl, I thought she looked great. I also liked Debra Messing’s dress great match with the Vogue Stacy! Too bad I have no where to wear a dress like that. lol.

Hayden’s dress, I agree, was such a flop. And it’s a shame, because she is such a cute girl. Debra Messing was awarded “Best Dressed” by ET’s fashion guru, Cojo (whatever his last name is). I like the simple, understated dresses best. I’ve always thought Debra Messing is gorgeous (my husband can’t get over her lack of, um, you know – leave it up to a guy to notice something like that!)
