Maternity (just looking like one, it’s not a real maternity dress!) or baby doll style dress? I’ll let you decide. With an opening like this, it must mean one thing, my Vogue dress is complete! Honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about it. It’s extremely comfortable and easy to sew, but I have some “issues” with this garment (one look at my face in this photo says it all, right?).
For one, my fabric is too bulky so it’s created ‘puffs’ at various seams and gathers and I can’t seem to get rid of them (I even steamed them to death with the iron – they’d lay flat for awhile and poofed right back up after cooling. By the way, this fabric scorches if you use too much heat on it). It’s also a bit on the heavy side so it just doesn’t drape and flow as much as what I would have liked. As for the pattern itself, it could stand to have several inches taken off of it – it would still give the same effect, but a bit more body contouring and less maternity looking (IMHO).

I think it looks great! Not maternity at all. That color is perfect for you.
Okay Stacy maybe its the way that you are standing but I don’t see the maternity aspect of the dress. Actually it looks very nice on you, to me. But I totally understand what you are saying because if you don’t like it, it doesn’t matter what others think!
Stacy, I think that dress is super cute… not maternity-ish at all.
The dress looks fine in the picture, Stacy! You look great!
Stacy, I think the dress looks adorable. I can’t see any of the puffiness you’re talking about. It really does look adorable on you but I understand when you don’t like the way a garment looks or feels. Doesn’t matter how many people like it.
Wear it out and see how you feel.
I’ve decided I’m taking apart the turquoise dress I made a few weeks ago. Although I think it looks better in person than in the photo, I just can’t stand how the gathered midriff makes me lose my waist!
You do look really nice in that dress, Stacy! Maybe wear it out in public and see if it gets good “reviews”. If strangers ask you when your are “due” then you know your reservations are valid.
I have a Folkwear Patterns Afghani Nomad dress that took a lot of fabric and I loved wearing EXCEPT that EVERYONE thought I was pregnant. So I wore it less and less often and it has been hanging in my closet for a few years now. I may cut it up for skirts, aprons, etc!
I’m going to take everyone’s advice and wear it out. It also gives me an excuse to have Bret take me out! LOL
It looks great on you, Stacy, and that blue becomes you so well. If you’re a tad uncomfortable with it, you could maybe cinch it at the waist a bit, by taking it the sides?
I made an empire top a few months ago and several people on my blog told me I looked a little pregnant – but I wear that top a whole lot and in real life it doesn’t look like that at all! Now your dress doesn’t look maternity even in a picture. Carolyn is right, though. We all know that feeling, I guess!
As others said, you’ll probably know whether you like it after you’re worn it a few times.
Oh, babydoll not maternity. This is absolutely adorable on you! As everyone else commented, you’ll have a better idea if its a keeper after you wear it out!
I think the dress looks very nice on you Stacy – I’m sorry you’re not sure if you’re in love with it. I just finished mine today (in the nick of time for the wedding I’m going to tonight) and am pretty pleased with my version. I’m really lacking in the chest department, so I ended up crossing over the front pieces instead to keep my covered a bit more because the “V” was WAY too deep for me. I’ll post a review on PR tomorrow. Enjoy the dress and wear it around some, it might just grown on you!
I like it. I think it looks very sophisticated, not maternity…so wear it now while that baby doll look is hot (unless you just really AREN’T comfortable after wearing it out!)
When we were in NYC over a week ago, it seemed lik eEVERYONE was wearing high-waisted tinics, tops, dresses, whatever. All ages and sizes of women, too. And some looked pregnant and some didn’t but I think it’s just the style and we aren’t used to it yet.
My first thought was “What a cute dress. I wish I could wear a dress like that.” And… I love that color on you.
I love the color and it looks so comfortable. It’s hard for any style like this that hits high and flows, not to look a little maternity but that’s really the style right now.
I think it looks great, maybe try it on again in a few days and see how you feel. It sure is the style.
It sounds like you don’t like it so i vote no, But you should mak it again. that neck line really works for you. That is my favorite neck line
